Selecting the correct boxing glove weight is one of the most impactful decisions a boxer, trainer, or brand builder can make. The wrong weight affects training quality, hand protection, and long-term joint health. Get it right, and your gloves become an extension of your training — invisible, comfortable, and perfectly suited to the task.
Quick answer: 10oz for bag and pad work · 12oz for general training · 14oz–16oz for sparring · 8oz–10oz for pro competition · 4oz–6oz for kids and MMA.
Why Glove Weight Matters
Boxing glove weight refers to the total weight of the glove — padding, leather, lining, and all. Heavier gloves have more foam padding, which means more protection for both the wearer and their training partner. Lighter gloves are faster and more closely simulate competition conditions.
The right weight depends on three key factors: your body weight, your intended use (bag work, pad work, sparring, or competition), and the level of hand protection required.
The Complete Weight Guide
| Weight | Best For | Body Weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4oz – 6oz | Kids / MMA | Under 100 lbs / MMA | Youth training, open-finger MMA gloves |
| 8oz | Pro Competition | Under 147 lbs | Professional fight use only |
| 10oz | Bag & Pads | Under 150 lbs | Speed and power work, not for sparring |
| 12oz | General Training | 130–160 lbs | Most popular all-around training weight |
| 14oz | Training + Sparring | 150–175 lbs | Best balance of speed and protection |
| 16oz | Sparring | 175 lbs+ | Recommended for all sparring sessions |
| 18oz | Heavy Sparring | 200 lbs+ | Maximum protection for heavyweight sparring |
10oz — Speed and Bag Work
Ten-ounce gloves are the go-to for bag work and pad work. They are fast, lightweight, and give you a feel closer to competition gloves. The tradeoff: they do not have enough padding for safe sparring. Use 10oz for heavy bag sessions, speed bag work, and mitt combinations.
12oz — The Versatile Choice
For boxers in the 130–160 lbs range, 12oz is the workhorse. Enough padding for general training, light enough to maintain speed, and widely accepted in most gym environments. This is our highest-selling weight for custom glove orders.
14oz — The Sweet Spot
Fourteen ounces hits a sweet spot between training performance and protection. Most gyms require at minimum 14oz for any sparring session. If you are building a training glove for a brand targeting intermediate-level boxers, 14oz is the go-to specification.
16oz — The Standard Sparring Glove
Sixteen ounces is the industry standard sparring weight for boxers over 150 lbs. The extra padding protects your partner and extends the lifespan of your hands. Any private label brand targeting gyms and training centers should always offer a 16oz option.
Building a Custom Glove Line?
If you are developing a private label boxing glove brand, we recommend offering at minimum three weights: 12oz, 14oz, and 16oz. This covers the majority of training use cases and gym requirements without overwhelming your first product catalog.
